NL Architects's proposal for a new entertainment venue in Amsterdam makes Madison Square Garden seem like a funeral parlor. It's an outdoor catwalk, a cinema, and a theater in one, and with its curved wooden frame, it looks like a bombed-out pirate ship from Star Trek that washed up on the shores of the IJ and wants to throw everyone a big ol' party. Did we mention that it spins?
Artecnica, a product company out in L.A., has given Co.Design an exclusive sneak peek at its newest line--a stunning assembly of lighting fixtures.
The company made its name pioneering a new approach to sustainability, hiring big-name designers such as Hella Jongerius, the Campana brothers, and Tord Boontje to create pieces that use both minimal amounts of material, and are hand-crafted in poor communities in Central America and beyond, thus creating new livelihoods with every new product.

Inception, Christopher Nolan's trippy popcorn shoot-em-up about dreams within dreams, was pretty much made for an infographic. In fact, that movie, with its many layers of dreamers inhabiting the mind of other dreams, could probably have benefited from a running infographic right in the corner of the frame. Unfortunately, the infographics that have been created around the movie so far are all lacking.
Juliette Warmenhoven's artwork is about the juxtaposition of nature and nurture. Somehow that led her to stuff a bonsai tree in a homemade baby incubator and twirl sprouting potatoes around in cages that also happen to play classical music. That seems to settle it, doesn't it? Culture wins, nature loses. QED.
An ingenious wheel that could turn any bike into an electric hybrid has won the U.S. round of the James Dyson Award, an event that's become the world's premier student-design competition. Tonight, the winner will be formally announced, at a Designer Pages event discussing the bright, bold future of design.
