Why David Fincher Is the Best Design Thinker in Hollywood

Eff the Oscars. More than any other Hollywood director today, Fincher is a designer at heart.

People flipped out when Christopher Nolan wasn't nominated for an Oscar, but it was David Fincher -- director of The Social Network -- who really got robbed during Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony. Instead of rewarding the director of a diamond-flawless piece of innovative pop-cultural art, the Academy gave its imprimatur to the director of a well-mounted but utterly traditional costume drama. Fincher is a director-as-designer -- and like any brilliant designer, he seems to attract the most attention for things that don't work (remember The Curious Case of Benjamin Button?) rather than things that perfectly, seamlessly do. Let's set the Academy straight.

Calling a director a "designer" is almost a tautology: indeed, anyone making creative choices about what to leave in or leave out, in any medium, is designing. But Fincher's coolly intelligent eye, laserlike attention to detail, and (in his best work) apparent fascination with storytelling as problem-solving, all set him apart from other filmmakers as a true designer-auteur. He makes films like Jony Ive makes iMacs: They just work -- with style to burn.

Take The Social Network. Fincher has said in interviews that he personally related to Zuckerberg's character: the young punk who thinks he's smarter than everyone else in the room, and actually is. (Makes sense: Fincher was directing Madonna videos when most dudes his age were still playing video games in Mom's basement.) But the film is a classic Fincherian puzzle, too: is it possible to make a film about pasty dorks tapping away on computers into something visual? That's a design problem through and through -- a product-design problem, no less. (That analogy to Ive was no accident.)

Faced with the merciless constraints imposed on him by screenwriter Aaron Sorkin -- a relentlessly talky script, a suffocatingly insular setting, barely any "action" to speak of -- Fincher finds solution after elegant solution. The Winklevoss twins' rowing competition scene stands out: the relentless music strains along with the twins in their bid for Olympic glory, but the tilt-shift cinematography makes everything in the scene look small and toylike. Their whole world is, literally, child's play compared to what Zuckerberg is building -- they just can't see it yet. It's cool, cruel and perfect:

Fincher's best films of the last ten years -- The Social Network, Zodiac, Panic Room -- all function this way, like exquisitely designed machines. That's not to say they don't contain compelling characters, too; it's just that they often seem oppressed by the nanoscopically precise tolerances of the worlds that Fincher builds around them. Which is, of course, the point -- like in this utterly masterful scene from Panic Room, where Fincher uses the physical design of the house, bedroom, and even individual objects to wrench the tension to a fever pitch:

Fincher knows that "form ever follows function," and even his first film, Alien³, displayed a discerning eye for "less is more" opportunities. In the opening credits, Fincher deftly sets up his story (and brutally disposes of Aliens's "happy ending") with little more than a few sharply composed, surgically deployed single images.

The Alien franchise was already well-known for impeccably designed credits sequences, but Fincher arguably tops his predecessors in terms of sheer skin-crawling, pitiless menace. But then, any Fincher film boasts top-shelf design for its opening credits. The title sequences of Se7en and Fight Club are a bit more David Carson-frenetic than Jony Ive-limpid, but Fincher's omniscient eye for detail is still instantly recognizable. Se7en's nightmarish mood-setting (designed by Kyle Cooper) also contains layers of narrative clues about a serial killer who doesn't reveal himself until the very end of the film; and the Fight Club opener, which Fincher helped design, was based on medical illustrations and includes visualizations of real neurophysical phenomena like action potentials.

His background in visual effects also gives Fincher a formidable toolset for solving the narrative-design puzzles he takes on. This is a guy who, when faced with the constraint of casting a pair of hulking patrician twins in The Social Network, found one actor he thought was perfect and cloned him digitally -- so seamlessly that if Armie Hammer hadn't done press for the film, few people would have ever known he wasn't really two people. Fincher's brand of pixel-perfect "invisible" effects may seem like cheating to some, but it's really just his way of achieving Kubrick-level creative control over his craft. Just watch this clip about the digital effects Fincher applied to his crime anti-procedural Zodiac and tell me this isn't a master designer at work.

Hollywood has made its peace with honoring geeky director-engineers like James Cameron, but somehow, director-designers like Fincher still don't quite compute during awards season. But maybe Fincher doesn't care about winning Oscars; maybe at the end of the day, he just cares more about what legendary designer Paul Rand prized above all: just being good.

    Designer! I think I've finally found the title for Fincher that I was looking for, because I just wasn't comfortable calling him a filmmaker. Fincher burst onto the scene with the anger and dimness that has plagued his career with his Alien3. He wastes no time and starts alluding to a kind of filmic ineptness, that seems to have sprung from his MTV filmmaking, in the 20 century fox logo in aliens3.
    As that video shows, the logo's theme fanfare does not progress as usual but instead freezes into that sinister sound. This is very telling of how Fincher operates: #1. Deviance and nihilism is Fincher's main export/point. #2 He just couldn't wait to thrust his self important deviance and nihilism upon the audience. #3 To make his point he subverts the popular fanfare into that sinister sound in an attempt to assert his opposition to "the system"(Academy Awards, etc.). The point is, Fincher has something to say, he wants to say it really badly but doesn't exactly know how. He ends up using dim methods like strangling the well-known fanfare to assert his deviance to the audience, which is so MTV-like/pop-culture-reference superficial that it dissolves into almost a desperate performance art.
    Welcome to Fincher's movies! That is him in a nutshell: desperately communicating his nihilism. Oh, that and remaking his favorite movies, which is further evidence of his dead imagination. He wastes no time in bowing to Kubrick as you can already see a 2001: Space Odyssey reference in the Alien video at 12:03. He's been playing with 2001, Barry Lyndon, and Citizen Kane for a while now, Social Network being his latest foray into Citizen Kane, Zodiac being his serious first. You say his attitude is less is more? Have you seen the budget for this guy's movies? They are the budgets of an inept director who would rather buy more grime and muck to stick on the walls than operate the camera in a more evocative way. A great example into this almost clueless filmmaking is Se7en. Fincher prefers to make Myth movies, hence the brown-green hues in all his films, the mythical texture that he seems to have perfected in Social Network(this is the "design" part). But before his ass knew how to do that, he basically just had it rain a lot and just withheld the name of the setting--Se7en. Can you believe that? He tried to make the film mythical, under the conceit that people believe myths more readily than they do reality, by not telling us a name for the city that the film is showcasing, because he believed that having either a real or fake name would kill the illusion. Yes, not too long ago, that was Fincher's idea of creating movie illusions. Isn't that amazingly dumb? This guy didn't have faith in images, possibly because he didn't know how to make them. And The Game makes Fincher look downright imbecilic, where his unleashed self-importance causes him to demand two audiences: us and one within the film, which works to nullify movie magic. Doltishness reemerges in Zodiac with the awkward use of pop songs as commentary, and I'm going to add the tilt-shift scene you mention, as I just found it silly and right in line with Fincher's usual amateurish approach to filmmaking.
    As for awards, I don't think he cares about them, but I find his films to be overwhelming evidence that he does care about critical acclaim, which is different. He wants his films to follow the paths of "the great" films, where the mass audience don't like them when they come out, the award shows don't acknowledge them, but in time they eclipse their competition and are considered great movies. This IS something he wants. He's not satisfied with making a good movie, which is why he can't get himself to make a social network movie, no, he feels he has to make Citizen Kane.
