Oh, to be a student again! We know, we know. What a cliché. But it really is the one time in your life when you can experiment--and fail--and not worry about losing your job.
The best student designs solve concrete problems, using out-of-the-box thinking. They can be small problems, such as what to do with old refrigerators. Dutch student Dirk Vander Kooij ground them up, then used a retired manufacturing robot to turn them into sleek, modern chairs:

Most glossy magazines focus on products you readers can actually buy. But that approach--while great for netting consumer buzz--ignores a huge swath of design: Ideas that, either because the capital or technology doesn’t yet exist, have yet to be manufactured. These concepts often represent where industries are headed and where the next great innovation will come from.
2-D design is our fancy way of saying traditional graphic design--everything from logos to branding to illustrations to typefaces, which can appear anywhere from in-print to on the web. It’s decided different from interactive designs that involve some sort of layered navigation. With those technicalities aside, let’s have a look at some past projects that we think exemplify innovation the discipline.
The very best examples do more than that, offering novel, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that approaches to such everyday activities as listening to music, reading a book, and changing the TV channel.

I’ll admit that when it comes to design, I have a soft spot in my heart for industrial equipment--that is, those pieces of design which are intended for specialized, professional use. These aren’t iPods or airplane kiosks: These are hardcore pieces of technology that you and I never get to appreciate on a daily basis. And that’s one reason why industrial equipment is such a vitally important area of design.
