Refugee Wearable Shelter

What can designers do to help during a refugee crisis? A group of students at the Royal College of Art London came up with a solution. Their wearable shelter converts from a jacket into a sleeping bag into a tent. Made of Tyvek—a durable material that is used in envelopes and weather-resistant housewrap—the design also has a reflective panel that is meant to keep a refugee dry and cool while they walk. They are cheap to manufacture, waterproof, durable, and recyclable. A version for winter is currently in the works.
